Your Proposal Timeline – When to Start Designing the Ring
Planning to propose? Here’s when to start designing the engagement ring, plus a free proposal timeline checklist.
Planning the perfect proposal? It all starts with the ring. But how early should you start designing it?
In this post, we break down a realistic proposal timeline to help you avoid last-minute stress and create something truly meaningful.
Start With a Timeline – Why You Need 3 to 6 Months
A custom engagement ring isn’t a last-minute purchase. Designing, sourcing, and setting the stone can take anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks, and that’s if everything goes smoothly.
We recommend starting the process at least 3 months before your ideal proposal date — even sooner if you want something custom.
Proposal Timeline Breakdown
6+ Months Before:
- Start researching ring styles
- Set a realistic budget
- Book a consultation
4–5 Months Before:
- Finalize design and stone choice
- Pay deposit
- Get proposal plans in motion (book venue, photographer, etc.)
2–3 Months Before:
- Ring is in production
- Plan any travel or coordination for proposal day
1 Month Before:
- Inspect the ring when it arrives
- Hide it safely
- Prepare speech or moment
Proposal Week:
- Clean the ring
- Finalise any decoys, dinner bookings, or surprises
