Lab-grown diamonds are one of the most significant developments in the jewellery industry in decades. They've entered the South African market at scale, and the question of whether to choose a natural or lab-grown diamond is one that almost every engagement ring buyer now faces.

What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite. It has the same chemical composition (pure carbon in a crystal lattice structure), the same physical properties, and the same optical characteristics as a natural diamond. The only difference is origin: a lab-grown diamond forms in a controlled environment over weeks rather than in the earth over billions of years.
Two primary methods are used: HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature), which replicates the conditions deep in the earth, and CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition), which grows diamond crystals from a carbon-rich gas. Both produce genuine diamonds.
A gemologist cannot distinguish a lab-grown diamond from a natural one with the naked eye or under standard magnification. Advanced laboratory equipment is required.

 

The Price Difference

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50–70% less than equivalent natural diamonds right now. A 1-carat round brilliant that costs R60,000 in natural form might cost R18,000–R25,000 in lab-grown. This price difference allows buyers to access significantly larger or higher-grade stones within the same budget.
It's a compelling financial argument particularly for buyers who prioritise size and appearance above all else.

 

The Value Consideration

One of the biggest conversations around lab-grown diamonds is resale value, and it’s important to put this into perspective.

Lab-grown diamond prices have declined as production has become more efficient and supply has increased. This means a lab-grown diamond purchased today is unlikely to retain its original retail value over time.

But natural diamonds shouldn’t automatically be viewed as an investment either. While they generally have a more established resale market than lab-grown diamonds, buying a natural diamond for R70,000 does not mean you could sell it for R70,000 in the future. In most cases, you should expect to receive significantly less than the original retail price.

This is where the conversation becomes less about which diamond holds its value and more about how much value you are comfortable potentially losing.

If you spend R12,000 on a lab-grown diamond and its resale value becomes minimal, your maximum financial exposure started at R12,000. If you choose a comparable natural diamond for R70,000, it may retain a greater percentage of its value, but you also committed considerably more money upfront and could potentially lose far more than R12,000 if you ever needed to resell it.

Most importantly, engagement rings are rarely purchased with the intention of reselling them. They are sentimental purchases intended to be worn for years, passed down, remodelled or kept as part of your family's story.

So rather than choosing between lab-grown and natural based purely on the idea of "investment value", consider what matters more to you: how much you want to spend today, what you want that budget to achieve, and how important the natural origin and rarity of the diamond are to you.

Neither choice is inherently better. The better choice is the one whose cost, characteristics and meaning make sense for you.

Lab-grown diamonds are often marketed as the ethical alternative to mined diamonds. The reality is more nuanced. Lab-grown diamonds are energy-intensive to produce — some facilities run on fossil fuels. The natural diamond industry, particularly in Southern Africa, supports significant employment and economic development in communities where few alternatives exist.

 

Well-sourced natural diamonds particularly those certified under the Kimberley Process and from reputable suppliers carry their own ethical integrity. Neither option is unambiguously superior on ethical grounds.
