If you are planning to propose over the summer holidays, the most useful thing to know is not which diamond to choose. It is how long the ring will take to make. A custom engagement ring is made to order, which means there is no box on a shelf waiting for you. There is a sequence of steps, and each one needs time to be done properly.
This guide walks through that sequence, explains where the time goes and gives you the dates that matter for a December or January proposal.
The short answer
From your first message to a finished ring in your hands, a custom engagement ring usually takes around four-six weeks. Some designs are quicker. Others, such as rings with unusual stones or detailed hand finishing, take longer. The timeline depends far less on how complicated the ring looks and far more on how quickly each decision is made.
Stage 1: Your enquiry and a personal reply
Everything starts with a quote request, a custom order form or a consultation. At Lailah & Co, I read and answer every request myself. This is where we talk about shape, carat weight, metal, ring size and budget, so that the quote you receive is for the ring you actually want.
Stage 2: Choosing your diamond
Next, we source diamond options that match your brief. You will see the key details of each one, including its grading report. This stage moves fastest when you know your priorities. If size matters most, lab-grown may suit you. If origin matters most, natural may be the better choice.
Stage 3: Approving your design
Your ring is designed in CAD (computer-aided design), which gives you a detailed render before anything is made. You can ask for changes to the band width, setting height or claw style. Most delays happen here, so take the time you need, but try to give clear feedback in one round.
Stage 4: The Diamond Reveal
Before your diamond is set, you receive a video of your actual stone. Not a stock image or a render, but the exact diamond you are paying for. Very few jewellers do this. I believe you should never pay for something you have not seen.
Stage 5: Making, setting and finishing
The metal is cast, the diamond is set and the ring is polished and checked. This is the longest stage, and it is the one that should never be rushed. A claw set in a hurry is a claw that fails early.
Stage 6: Delivery
Once the ring passes its final quality check, it is packaged and delivered or collected.
Key dates for a summer proposal in 2026
If you are proposing over the festive season or in the new year, these are the order dates to plan around:
Christmas delivery: place your order by 9 November 2026.
Mid to end January delivery: place your order by 27 November 2026.
These dates exist because of how long each stage takes, along with slower supplier and courier schedules over December. They are not sales deadlines.
How to keep your timeline on track
1. Know your ring size, or find a discreet way to measure it. A wrong size can mean a resize, and some designs cannot be resized easily.
2. Set your budget before you request a quote, so options can be matched to it straight away.
3. Gather a few images of rings you love, and note what you love about each one.
4. Give design feedback in one clear round where you can.
5. Leave a buffer of at least two weeks before your proposal date.
Planning ahead without the pressure
The best engagement rings are rarely the ones bought in a rush. If your proposal is months away, starting now gives you time to understand every choice. If it is weeks away, a clear brief and quick decisions will still get you there.
If you would like to know what is possible for your timeline, request a personal quote or book a consultation. I will reply to you myself.
